Rukungiri Primary Teachers’ College Transitions into Kabale University Rukungiri Campus

The former Rukungiri Primary Teachers’ College (RPTC), established in 1980 as a Teacher Training College (TTC) in Nyakaina under the auspices of the Church of Uganda, has been officially transitioned into Kabale University Rukungiri Campus. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in the region’s educational landscape.

The transition stems from the government’s policy to phase out core PTCs/Grade III and IV qualifications in favor of bachelor’s degree programs. Guided by the Ministry of Education and Sports, the handover ceremony was witnessed by key stakeholders, including the foundation body, Kabale University administration, RPTC Board of Governors and staff, the Rukingiri RDC, and local government representatives.

Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, Bishop of North Kigezi, emphasized that this partnership is not about relinquishing Church land or property but rather embracing a transformative journey from a PTC to a university, unlocking a plethora of opportunities for development. He underscored the Church’s unwavering commitment to upholding Christian values and urged Kabale University leadership to adhere to these principles, ensuring a harmonious and productive collaboration.

Canon Sabiiti Mahirane, Chairman of the RPTC Board of Governors, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education and Sports for approving the transition proposal and for their unwavering support throughout the process. Ministry representatives clarified that the college was not phased out but rather reimagined to reach greater heights, moving from certificate programs to degree-level education. They commended the partnership, expressed their confidence in its success, and pledged their continued support during the transition.

This merger signals a new era for Rukungiri Primary Teachers’ College, poised to elevate teacher education in the region and prepare future generations of educators to excel in their profession and contribute meaningfully to national development.
