Fake Graduations and Forged Booklets: Makerere University Faces Allegations

Makerere University, known as “The Hill,” has been hit by claims of fake graduations involving doctored graduation booklets. The university, a prestigious institution, is allegedly facing a rise in academic fraud, with students resorting to forging documents to meet parental expectations.

Allegations suggest that some students, unable to meet graduation requirements, turn to graphic designers on Nasser Road, Kampala’s infamous street for fake documents. This practice involves creating booklets with doctored names, deceiving unsuspecting parents.

One student revealed that intense parental pressure led her to engage in this misconduct. Facing retakes in various course units, she resorted to forging a graduation booklet to maintain the illusion of successful completion.

The fraud involves manipulating the graduation list, adding names of students who have not met requirements. Graphic designers allegedly play a pivotal role in creating these fraudulent booklets, costing around Shs200,000.

Despite university authorities denying the allegations, urging parents to verify academic awards, incidents of fake graduations persist. The university’s response emphasizes its structured academic process, but some alumni share experiences of successfully forging booklets to appease parents.

The Ministry of Education expressed concern, calling for public sensitization and parental involvement to curb academic fraud. While Makerere plans to automate academic processes, challenges persist, and other universities, including Kyambogo, report similar issues.

Parents are advised to invest time in verifying their children’s official university status, ensuring authenticity to prevent falling victim to fraudulent graduation celebrations.
